• Beaverton survives penalty kicks, beats Grand for Class 6A Boys soccer title

Beaverton goalkeeper Mason Schinderle had four saves in the game and one big save in the penalty kick shootout, which was his second of the week.

“Honestly, unreal,” said Schinderle. “Nothing but belief in these boys. From day one, our target was state. We’ve achieved it. I believed in them all year, even when we were down, when we were winning all the time. Because I know what we stand for. We stand for do the right thing. We have it on our practice jerseys, our warm up jerseys, and as a culture set by our coach that we continue to do every single day at practice and games.”

The prospect of facing penalties a second time this week could have struck fear in the heart of many goalkeepers. But Schinderle was looking forward to the challenge.

“I was ready for penalties. Once that timer went off in the second half of overtime, I was ready,” said Schinderle. “I had faith in these boys. I trust them. We just went into West Linn and got out of there in penalties. I was ready.”

The contest went to a penalty-kick shootout, where the Beavers seemed to have plenty of confidence.

“We’ve got the best keeper in the state, so we all knew we had a great chance to win it,” Spear said.

And it was a challenge that Schinderle had been thinking about. “I never liked them (penalty kicks) until probably this week, honestly,” Schinderle said with a smile. “I remember watching Jesuit last year (in a 3-2 win over McMinnville in a match decided by penalty kicks), and (Crusader goalie) Fox Mason. I’m good friends with him, and seeing him save the game-winning penalty, and I was like, ‘I wish that was me.’ I didn’t a game-winning one, but I saved one.”

  • Beavers go for first championship since 1985 in 6A boys final against Grant

Senior Mason Schinderle, the league's goalkeeper of the year, is the vocal leader of the defense. He sealed the team's semifinal win at No. 2 West Linn by stopping a penalty kick in the shootout.

“We can't score against him in practice. He's a pain,” Carney said. “He's up there with the best I've ever seen. It's hard to get past our midfield and our defense, and then you've got him to get past. It's pretty difficult for teams.”

  • ‘It was my moment’: Beaverton soccer advances to 2025 Class 6A championship after penalty shootout

The Beavers led the shootout 4-3, and teammate Cole White’s penalty kick hit the crossbar. If West Linn’s penalty kick was good, they were going to a sixth round.

But no matter. White, along with the rest of Beaverton’s boys soccer team, has the utmost faith in his goalkeeper.

“I feel with him in goal, we can’t lose,” said White. “No chance.”

Schinderle got a hand on the next kick as Beaverton players and students stormed the field. The Beavers were able to hold on for the 2-1 (4-3 PKs) victory at West Linn High School to advance to the Class 6A state championship game.

“I knew it was my moment. I’ve been dreaming about a moment like this forever,” Schinderle said. “Never been the best at penalties. Stood my ground. Watch where he went and followed, just followed through.”
